Obsessive Compulsive disorder
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition that involves obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. It can affect all of us at any time, though it more commonly occurs during early adulthood.
Many of us experience intrusive thoughts from time to time. When these thoughts become part of our normal behaviour it can turn in to an obsession.
The symptoms of OCD are intrusive by nature and can have a big impact on everyday life. There are a number of treatment options available in order to get the symptoms under control and it is important to get help at the early stages.
To understand how it affects people let's break it down in stages:
Obsession
This happens when an unwanted urge or thought repeatedly enters the mind. It's usual for this thought to be distressing. For example "If I don't check that the door is locked 20 times someone could get in and take things".
Anxiety
Because of the nature of this type of thought it's not surprising that this can lead to feelings of stress and anxiety.
Compulsion
So, we develop an urge (compulsion) to carry out an action. Perhaps we will start washing our hands over and over (a physical urge) or just to start counting (a mental urge).
Temporary Relief
In carrying out this action we provide a temporary fix to help ease the feelings of stress and anxiety. Unfortunately, the obsessional thoughts will soon return and we start the whole cycle again.
OCD is an anxiety disorder, so tackling the anxiety is the key.
This is where Solution Focused Hypnotherapy comes in. The natural process of hypnotherapy is to help you to relax. Once you are relaxed at the right level, the therapist is able to talk to you on a subconscious level and this helps you to change your thought patterns. Trying hypnotherapy can also be good in order to learn relaxation techniques so you can help yourself in the future.
If you think you may have OCD it's important you visit your doctor before signing up to any therapy. As your doctor knows your past history they are better placed to suggest what types of treatments will help you best.
If you are having therapy already and would like to try hypnotherapy it is important to talk to your existing therapist and explain that you'd like to try it. They will then make contact with the hypnotherapist in question if they feel they need to, in order to ensure that there is no conflicting or overlapping content.
I can't promise that hypnotherapy will work for you, but can suggest that it's definitely worth trying as it is a safe and natural approach (it's drug free!) that you may find helpful, not just for OCD but for any anxiety or stress based issue.
