I have recently joined the Hidden Treasures team of Therapists that provide their services to the general public. Based in Commercial Road, Shepton Mallet the shop offers new and second hand items with the Healing Rooms based at the rear of the building for the therapists to use. The therapies currently on offer are Reflexology, Reiki Healing, Acupuncture, Bowen Technique, Kinesiology, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and much more. I highly recommend a visit to the shop to find out more. Left: Hidden Treasures shop front. Below: One of the high standard treatment rooms After being away from Hypnotherapy for so long due to my recovery from a Stroke I thought it would be wise to attend this two day refresher course to make sure I was up to date and to give myself a push to get the business going again. Hosted by David Newton and Susan Rodrigues it was like old times. Plenty of information mixed with interesting anecdotes and much laughter. It was great to meet up with an old colleague again as well as to meet some new ones. Now looking forward to putting it all in practise. Another weekend another CPD. This time it was to learn more about and understand Self Hypnotherapy for Childbirth and it was led by the ever cheerful Susan Rodrigues and Paula Rose. Once again it was full of fascinating information and was fun too. It was well attended with myself and Gareth Strangemore-Jones the token males. We learned about the changes over time as to the methods used by humans to give birth and the reasons behind them. We also learned that nature knows what to do and that modern man has made things more complicated than is necessary. It really was eye opening to learn what hypnotherapy can do to make the pregnancy and the eventual birth so much easier and enjoyable, just by helping the mother (and the father) relax. It's quite simple really, just stay calm, but, as we all know staying calm is not that simple. This is where your hypnotherapist comes in. Teaching you the techniques you will use to stay calm and supporting you and your partner throughout your pregnancy. As usual I took plenty of notes of which below is just a short selection.
If you are interested in hypnotherapy at any time during your pregnancy please do get in touch to find out more. Every year, as part of our continued personal development (CPD) we have to attend at least two CPD courses in order to be a member of the Association of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH). This was my first of the year. The course was held on Sunday 25th September at the Clifton Practice in Bristol and led by Dr Naeem Iqbal and was well attended, as always, by fellow hypnotherapist from throughout the UK. It was a fascinating study of how the brain works at a level not covered on the Hypnotherapy course. I found it very rewarding finding out just how hypnotherapy changes the working of the brain to enable a person to change how they think and feel. I took plenty of notes and I'd like to share some of them with you below:
This is just a snippet of what we went through and I'm keen to learn more. Course Completed - Fully Qualified I never thought learning how the brain works would be so much fun. The last 10 months have whizzed by and I can now say, with great pride, that I am a fully qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist. Wow, what a journey. During my time on the course my fellow students have become my friends and we have developed a strong supportive bond with each other. It will be strange not meeting up with them every month. That said I'm sure we will bump in to each other as we attend various courses to keep ourselves up to date. My thanks to David Newton and Susan Rodrigues of the Clifton Practice. Their excellent professional tutorage and guidance was/is first class, and thanks to all the various teachers and presenters who took a module or two during the course. They were all lovely people to meet and learn from. You have inspired us all. My thanks also to all the volunteers who agreed to let me practise on them. I know some of you gained a great deal from it whilst others learnt something else. Either way I definitely gained a huge amount by being able to have valuable time with getting to grips with the techniques required, to enable me to provide the positive results that hypnotherapy brings. Without your help I would not have been able to learn so much or to be able to reach the high standards expected of me at the Clifton Practice. My huge thanks also to my wonderful friends and especially my family who have supported me throughout. Your support has been, and still is, extremely valued. I appreciate you putting up with me as I returned each month with new knowledge with a need to share it with you, right away! I am forever in your debt. What next? Well now my aim is to promote hypnotherapy. To make it as normal to be registered with a hypnotherapist as it is to be registered with a dentist or a doctor. Life is stressful but it needn't be. Life is meant to be fun, every day should be a joy. Hypnotherapy can help you live life to the full. So, who's your hypnotherapist? Get in touch. Last weekend we were all very privileged to meet former WBC Super Middleweight Champion of the World Glenn Catley. He provided us with a brilliant talk of how he got into boxing and how he managed to achieve his dreams of becoming British and World Champion. Our course tutor David Newton was very instrumental in helping Glenn with this via the use of Hypnotherapy His professional boxing career began on May 27th 1993 when he beat Rick North on a unanimous decision in his home town of Bristol. Within his first year, Catley had notched up 7 straight wins and was given the opportunity in November 1994 to compete against an iconic British Boxing Legend - Kirkland Laing. Glenn stopped Laing within 5 rounds which elevated him up through the British Rankings and a step closer to his first goal within the paid ranks of becoming a British Champion. The next three years would see him develop as a recognisable charismatic figure on the British Boxing scene and on January 10th 1998 Catley had positioned himself as the Mandatory Challenger to face long standing British Middleweight Champion Neville Brown. After eight compelling rounds, Brown failed to come out for the 9th round and Glenn was declared the winner and British Middleweight Champion. The explosive fight was noted as being one of the best British Championship fights ever to be screened on Sky Sports. In the same year, Glenn was unexpectedly given the opportunity to contest for the WBC Super Middleweight World Championship with only 11 days’ notice against fellow Brit Richie Woodhall. Glenn lost to a 12 round controversial decision, which was noted from media and boxing critics alike as being a complete travesty of justice for British Boxing. This controversial loss enabled Glenn to gain in defeat and positioned him to fight Eric Lucas for the WBC Super Middleweight Final Eliminator. The fight took place in Montreal on December 10th 1999, where Glenn stopped Lucas in the 12th and final round to secure his position as the WBC Super Middleweight Mandatory Challenger and challenger to new Champion Marcus Bayer. Catley’s second opportunity for World title success came on May 5th 2000. He left nothing to chance and relieved the judges from determining their decision as Glenn knocked out Bayer in the 12th and final round to become the WBC Super Middleweight Champion of the World. Since retiring from the ring, Glenn is a regular co-commentator on Eurosport, commentating on Boxing Contest’s throughout Europe where he shares his insight Knowledge and experience on Championship fights throughout Europe. Glenn accredits a lot of his success in the ring down to Clinical Hypnotherapy, which he used and underwent throughout his professional career, which is why and now, since hanging up his gloves, he has subsequently studied, trained and qualified as a clinical Psychotherapist and Hypnotherapist DHP,HPD,MNCH,AFSFH Lic. There is much more to this story and it would be best to hear it from the man himself. He has his own, unique way of telling it and it's an emotional roller coaster of a story. He is also a really lovely guy to meet. Everyone of us on the course enjoyed his visit. Personally I am really looking forward to learning more on how to assist athletes achieve their dreams and goals. If you are interested in finding out more about Glenn Catley and the services he offers please visit his website by clicking here. For all of you who were unable to purchase a copy of last weeks Shepton Mallet Journal here is the article that was in the Health Matters section. My big thanks to Anna Garside for asking the questions.
I'm always open and willing to do more of this sort of thing. So if any magazine or newspaper editors are reading this and are interested please get in touch. (Online version is here) This weekend was another session at the Clifton practice and this time it was about pain and how to help people deal with it better. A couple of lovely ladies called Jade Painter and Dorothea Read of North Cardiff Hypnotherapy (and previous students at the Clifton Practice) took the Saturday afternoon session where they explained how to help people cope with having chemotherapy. It's a tricky subject as there are so many variants but they explained how hypnotherapy helps people cope so much better with the side effects of having chemotherapy and the techniques that can be used. I still have much to learn on this subject and look forward with getting to grips with it. We were also taught another technique for helping those with mild phobias, something called the Swish technique. The course continues to be fascinating and fun. |
