Sleeping Problems
Sleep is very important for our body and brain. It enables our brains to process the day and the body to repair and mend. When we don't have enough sleep we feel exhausted, unmotivated and easily stressed.
After many nights of bad sleep our mental and physical health is often affected. This can lead to conditions like depression, heart disease and diabetes.
We all know that sleep is important but for some it is not easy to get the amount of sleep needed for good health.
If we sleep well it will follow different stages that form a cycle. In this cycle are two types of sleep called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and Non-Rapid Eye Movement (Non-REM).
Initially, when we first drift off we go into the Non-REM stage. During this stage our bodies take the opportunity to repair any wear and tear from the day, build bone and muscle strength and boost our immune system. When we are woken up whilst in Non-REM stage we often feel disorientated.
The REM stage makes up around 20% of our normal sleep cycle. In a single night this happens about 4-6 times, each episode lasting around 20 minutes. During this stage we process the day. Our brains go through all the things we've heard and learnt and decides what we need to keep and what to let go. Much of it is guess work so it sometimes gets things wrong. This stage is very important for our memory and learning. We also replenish the feel good hormones of Serotonin and Dopamine. Too little REM can make us feel anxious and irritable, too much can make us feel exhausted as REM is very tiring.
Both of these phases ensure we wake up ready for the day ahead.
I think we can all relate to how it feels after a bad night's sleep. Whether it's something on our mind from the day before or noise from outside keeping us awake, just one bad night is common and tends to rectify itself quickly the following night.
Having numerous bad nights will give us health issues, both mentally and physically and can have a lasting affect.
