Stress
Stress is very common and very normal. We experience it in our working and personal lives regularly and we all have our own methods of coping when stressed.
When we find we can't cope with stress it then becomes a problem both to our mental and physical health.
Stress is a 'catch-all' term that is used to explain the feelings we have when we feel we can't cope, which can range from minor irritation right through to a complete breakdown.
To some, stress can be a motivational tool helping them perform at their optimum level and create a boost in energy. To others it can be a hindrance, causing major health issues.
Stress is caused by the body's natural reaction to defend itself. In an emergency situation stress will inform the body and brain to exert maximum effort in order to be safe. Yet, because the extra energy has nowhere to go it can cause us problems. We may feel depressed, angry, distrusting and rejection can follow.
Living with these feeling for too long can be hazardous to our mental and physical health. It can lead to headaches, high blood pressure and insomnia. In the case of exam nerves it can cause us to have the sensation of butterflies in our stomach. We may question our memory and negatively forecast that we will fail. Our palms will become sweaty with our hearts racing in the process. Chronic stress is physically, emotionally and psychologically draining.
Common causes are things like job interviews, long-term illness, bereavement, relationship issues, money worries and so on. Even 'happy' events, such as moving house or having to do a Best Man's speech at a wedding can cause us stress. It's important to recognise that what one person see's as stress another may see as fun. Some people naturally excel at speaking in public for example, but for others it's their worst nightmare. So our perception of the situation becomes key.
Hypnotherapy can help us see things differently, helping to change our perception from a fear factor to excitement or fun.
A certain amount of stress is not a bad thing. It makes sure we get up in the morning, get to work on time or do our daily chores. It also helps keep us safe and avoid unnecessary risks. It's when stress starts to affect what before was okay that we need to take notice and do something in order to ensure it doesn't become a problem.
There are many stress management techniques we can use before trying therapy.
Just breathing in and out slowly will help us to relax. It's best to breathe into our stomach when doing this for maximum effect. We could change our routine perhaps, go a different way to work for instance to avoid a certain busy route. Maybe go to bed earlier or write a 'To Do' list before we go to sleep to help avoid thinking too much.
If these don't work then don't leave it for too long before seeking help.
Hypnotherapy has a good track record of helping people cope with stress.
The therapist will help you identify the cause/s of your stress and afterwards help you come up with a long term plan in order to change things. Providing you feel this therapy is for you it can begin to work within a few sessions, providing you follow the instructions given by the hypnotherapist. You may begin to feel more confident that you can now handle to situations that previously caused you stress and, in turn begin to feel more confident.
